New DVLA Trailer Registration Rules for Caravan Owners (October 2025 Update)
Planning a trip to Europe with your caravan or trailer? A major change in DVLA guidance means you may now need to register your trailer — even for private use.
What’s Changed?
As of August 2025, the DVLA has updated its Trailer Registration Scheme guidance. Previously, only commercial trailers needed registration for travel abroad. Now, any trailer over 750kg, including touring caravans, must be registered when travelling outside the UK.
This change aligns with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (1968), which the UK began following after Brexit. While UK law has not changed, the new guidance is being enforced at European borders.
✅ Do You Need to Register?
Where You’re Towing | Do You Need DVLA Trailer Registration? |
---|---|
Within the UK | ❌ No – UK law has not changed |
Travelling into Europe | ✅ Yes – if trailer/caravan is over 750kg |
Towing a car behind a motorhome | ❌ No – A-frame towing is banned in the EU |
What About CRiS?
While DVLA registration isn’t needed for UK use, most insurers still require your caravan to be registered with CRiS (Central Registration and Identification Scheme). This proves ownership and aids in theft recovery.
Can I Tow My Car Behind My Motorhome in Europe?
No — the Department for Transport has confirmed that towing a car on an A-frame is not permitted in EU countries, even though it is legal in the UK. This rule is already being enforced.
What Should I Do Now?
- If staying in the UK: No DVLA registration required, but ensure CRiS registration is in place.
- If travelling to Europe:
- Register your trailer: Register here
- Display a separate trailer registration plate
- Carry your CRiS document
- Leave the towed car at home
