Hook-Up Trips the RCD

Symptoms: Site or van RCD trips as soon as you plug in, or when an appliance runs.

Quick Isolation

  1. Unplug all 230V appliances (kettle, charger, fridge to 230V off).
  2. Reset site post and van RCD/MCBs; plug in with appliances still unplugged.
  3. Turn on circuits one-by-one to find the offender (sockets, charger, water heater, fridge element).

Common Causes

  • Water ingress at external socket or awning light wiring.
  • Failed mains charger (EC/PSU) leaking to earth.
  • Defective fridge 230V element.
If it trips immediately with everything unplugged, stop and email us — RCD faults are safety-critical.
230V Safety
No 12V Power When Off-Grid
  1. Check master 12V switch and battery isolator.
  2. Measure leisure battery: >12.2V at rest; recharge if low.
  3. Inspect main fuse and inline fuses near the battery/PSU.
  4. Hard-reset control panel/PSU for 2–3 minutes.
Voltage collapsing under a small load usually indicates a sulphated battery — replacement likely.
12V Electrical
Water Pump Won’t Run
  • Check tank level and the pump switch on the panel.
  • Verify pump fuse at PSU/EC unit.
  • Pressure systems: close all taps, open one to prime; check for air locks.
  • Microswitch taps: confirm a positive “click”; broken microswitch = no run.
Water System
Fridge Not Cooling (Gas / 230V / 12V)
  • 12V mode cools only while driving (alternator feed).
  • Gas: bottle on, regulator OK, clean flame, clear flue.
  • 230V: check van supply and fridge fuse; allow several hours from warm.
Appliances
Space/Water Heater Won’t Fire (e.g., Truma Combi)
  • Ensure 12V present and adequate gas.
  • Combi: water onboard if heating water; correct mode and fan speed.
  • Clear vents and reset lockout codes on the control panel.
Heating & Hot Water
Lights Flicker or Are Dim
  • Check resting battery voltage; then measure with EHU on (charger output?).
  • Inspect grounds/returns and crimp joints.
  • Replace failing LEDs; confirm polarity on retrofits.
12V Electrical
Toilet Won’t Flush
  • Check the dedicated fuse and 12V supply.
  • Ensure cassette fully latched (flush is inhibited otherwise).
  • If it shares the main pump, prime the water system first.
Habitation
Solar Charging Looks Low
  • Winter, shade and low sun angle reduce output substantially.
  • Clean panel; check controller LEDs/app and wiring terminals.
  • Measure array voltage at controller in good daylight.
